In 1937, during the study of magnetic properties of metals, Friedrich Förster discovered the influence of the Earth's magnetic field on the test coils of test equipment. He started to develop ultra- sensitive measuring instruments for magnetic fields, later on known as Förster probes. The FEREX fluxgate magnetometer is based on this principle to this day.
This unit measures disruptions in the Earth's magnetic field caused by ferromagnetic objects. It provides reliable detection of ferromagnetic metals such as iron, steel, and nickel. The FEREX can therefore be used for archeological digs and geographical studies as well as detecting old weaponry such as unexploded WWII bombs.
